Packaging Design: Crisco Coconut Chips

 

Health and wellness has definitely taken a front seat in people’s lives lately. But there is a popular notion that healthy doesn’t taste great nor is it enjoyable. But Crisco came up with a range of snacking products made from dehydrated coconut slivers, flavoured organically that make the snacks super fun and an absolute treat! I had the joy of working on the packaging design for the fabulous product.

Designing a packaging for a product that can be exported and cater to health conscious buyers.

Developing a packaging design that seem fun, clean, healthy and tropical.

 

Challenges

 

A new product in the market will make buyers first feel uncomfortable to pick up from shelves. How can we make the buying decision easier?

 

Research

 

With research it was understood that there were not many players in coconut snacking within India. I had to conduct market study in a global level where fresh colours, window packaging and Kraft paper packaging were prominent.

I did not want to go with a Kraft paper packaging since it was too common in the healthy snack segment.

I also did not want to provide a window in the packaging which only leads to more plastic wastage when disposed.

By working out multiple wireframes and testing out the coloured prototypes, I zeroed down on a placement of an illustration in the cover and keep the packaging heavy with the illustration of a coconut and the chips in the centre. A palette to accentuate the tropical feeling was chosen for the final artwork.

The Colour Palette

The colours of the coconut tree- green and brown were chosen for the base palette. Something to break the monotony of the natural palette, I added a Spanish pink, which also adds a bit of tropical-ness to the packaging design. A palette that is truly unique like the product.
